Our Story

a Beautiful Project was founded in 2017. It all started with Prom Dresses.

"I began this journey when I was 17 years old, it started as a beauty blog. Then at 21, God planted a seed in my heart of service. I decided to collect prom dresses from friends and families and donated them to young girls in need. I contacted my high school, Morton East and they allowed me to host my first ever “prom dress giveaway." My younger sister Suzzy and I, who both graduated from Morton East high school,

arrived nervous and we didn’t know what to expect.

The first girl we met, her family’s house had burned down, and they were struggling financially.

Some of the girls that we’ve been able to assist throughout the years have been black and brown girls in poverty, teen moms, and a sex traffic survivor. Listening to their stories changed my life.

In that moment, I knew this project was something bigger than me and I needed to keep it going."

artistic DIRECTOR/LEADER

Angie Valasquez

Angie Velazquez is an Actress/Teaching Artist in Chicago and the Artistic Director in "a Beautiful Project’s Theater Arts Program. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, with a major in Communications, Media, and Theater. She has worked at the Black Ensemble Theater where she was able to write her own stories and perform it onstage. This freedom to express herself through her creativity was a different side to Theater she hadn’t experienced. She realized how important it is for youth to tell their stories as a catalyst to heal themselves and the people around them with similar struggles.  She wants the young men and women to have a safe space where they can be themselves, be encouraged, create their own art, and being free to express it to the world.
